  1. Hello HJ, I know this is a big chunky text messaged, and I know your time is extremely important but if could please manage to read my message it would mean the world to me

I'm extremely wowed at all this amazing work you've done, you

I'm going to give a bit of a back story

I took a animation course in my High School (we are different than traditional high schools we have laboratories that specialize in robotics, marketing, video, graphics, and a advanced course on animation)

...which is were I went, before I did a little research one of the video's was yours, it was art at 30 frames per second

it just left me stunned in what was physically possible in animation (I animated using after effects using the puppet tool)

anyways now, I've decided thats whats I'm going to do. I'm reading through animation books (one said I had to learn how to draw...and I was like....really :[...YEAH IF YOU DON"T KNOW HOW TO DRAW YOUR WALKING INTO HELL ...okay I'll learn to draw)

So now I've learned how to draw and I've just finished my senior year in high school.

but sometimes I look back into some of these videos (like RED or the Mr Smiles :D )

right now I'm starting collage and I'm taking general ED,

But in the background I'm getting a friend to work on a animation while were both in college.

I know this may sound weird coming from a complete random stranger that you've never met (It took a lot of courage for me to type this)

I'd really want to know on how I could improve, (I have my eyes set on Cal Arts :D since well I haven't seen anything but pure creative genius from there)

but would that mean I'd have to keep learning how to draw until, I can do over the top complex characters to get accepted into CALARTS

thank you for reading this, by the way if I ever got into a bending battle, I would choose earth bending :3

Me and my friend would love to hear back from you.

ps. here is the movie I worked on my Senior year in my high school, I did everything except the illustrations and the flash animations. Won first place in our school.

    1. Hi,

I apologize for the late response. I didn't think anyone's gonna comment on this portfolio blog, so I found your message just now.

The bottom line of my answer is that CalArts is a great place to learn, but it's not the only way. Going to CalArts worked out very well for me. The classes and the people I got to experience there were priceless(the school was pretty pricy though lol). On the other hand, there are so many great artists that have various educational backgrounds. Some of them didn't even go to college, they took classes from some institutions such as Concept Design Academy.

Drawing skill is depending on what you want to do. If you want to do final cut editing or after effect, you might not need a very good drawing skill. If you want to do design or traditional animation, then you do.

I think it's amazing that you have such a passion to work on an independent project. If you are unsure about the way you are going, I think it's because you didn't get enough art education yet. I think you can think about what you want to do first, and find a proper place or media(blog, video or books) you can learn that from.

I feel a little weird about telling you those stuff, cause myself am also still learning. Those are just my personal thought and experience, so I won't say this is the 'right' answer. It'll be good if you take this as a side note. Good luck and thank you for the nice feedback! I hope I'm not too late...
